WattBeat support
WattBeat turns the heart rate from your Apple Watch into an estimated cycling power figure and broadcasts it from your iPhone over Bluetooth, so that Zwift, ROUVY and other apps see it as a power meter and a heart rate monitor. It is not a smart trainer: it cannot change resistance.
Contact
Email support@haleinteractive.com. Most questions are answered the same day. It helps to include:
- your iPhone and Apple Watch models and their software versions,
- which cycling app you use and on what device (iPad, Apple TV, Mac, Windows, Android),
- what the Diagnostics screen shows: the info button at the top of the iPhone app’s Metrics tab.
Getting started
- Install WattBeat on the iPhone; the watch app installs with it. Open both once and allow Health access on the watch and Bluetooth on the iPhone.
- Open WattBeat on the watch. It starts an indoor cycling workout on its own and shows your heart rate within a few seconds.
- Open WattBeat on the iPhone and leave it on screen. The top of the Metrics tab shows the name to look for, “WattBeat” followed by four digits.
- In your cycling app, pair that name as the power source and as the heart rate monitor. Once paired, you can lock the phone.
- Set your heart rate range and maximum watts on the Controls page of either app. Watts are zero at the bottom of the range and reach your maximum at the top. Changes on one device follow on the other.
- When you are done, press Stop on the page to the left of the watch’s metrics, or the Stop button on the iPhone. Both devices stop, and the workout is saved to Apple Health.
When something does not work
The cycling app cannot find WattBeat
- Unlock the iPhone and bring WattBeat to the front. iOS hides the name of an app that is in the background, so a locked phone cannot be found by any cycling app. The watch shows “Open WattBeat on iPhone” while this is the case. Once an app has paired, the phone can be locked.
- On a Mac or iPad signed into the same Apple account as the phone, the phone appears under its own name (for example “David’s iPhone”), not as “WattBeat 1234”. Pair with that entry.
- Bluetooth must be on in iPhone Settings, not only in Control Center. The Metrics tab’s name banner is dim when the phone is not broadcasting; Diagnostics says why.
- Apple TV allows only two Bluetooth accessories at once. WattBeat counts as one even though it supplies both power and heart rate. Disconnect another accessory if the limit is reached.
- WattBeat is deliberately not listed as a controllable trainer. Look for it under power source and heart rate.
Watts stay at zero
- Heart rate below your minimum. Watts are zero until your heart rate rises above the bottom of the range you set (65 bpm by default). Lower the minimum on the Controls page if you want watts at rest.
- No heart rate reaching the phone. After fifteen seconds without a reading the phone drops to zero and says “Waiting for Apple Watch”. Check that the watch app is open and showing a heart rate, that the watch is on your wrist and snug, and that Bluetooth is on for both devices.
- Health access was denied. The watch says so and names the fix: in the Health app on iPhone, tap your profile picture, then Apps, then WattBeat, and turn on Workouts and heart rate.
- The ride is stopped. The Metrics screen says “Ride stopped”. Press Start on either device.
Numbers differ from my cycling app
WattBeat shows the heart rate and estimated watts it is sending. A cycling app may smooth or average them, and it computes its own totals, so small differences are normal. A watts figure that lags a few seconds behind heart rate is also normal.
Workouts in Apple Health
WattBeat saves an indoor cycling workout when you press Stop after a ride of at least a minute. Shorter sessions are discarded so that opening the app for a look leaves nothing behind. If you quit the watch app from the app switcher instead of pressing Stop, watchOS ends and saves the workout itself.
The watch keeps coming back to the front
watchOS returns to an app that has a workout running whenever you raise your wrist. Press Stop on the page left of the metrics when you finish riding.
Purchases and refunds
WattBeat is sold through the App Store, so purchases, receipts and refunds are handled by Apple. To request a refund, use Apple’s Report a Problem page. We cannot issue refunds ourselves.
Privacy
Nothing leaves your devices except the Bluetooth broadcast to the app you pair. The privacy policy has the details.
